Holistic Healing Center's Website has a New Resource Page on Regenerative Agriculture.
For over a decade now, there has been emphasis on the microbiome and the fact that our health depends on many microorganisms in our GI tract, skin, etc, There is a 10 to 1 ratio of microbial cells to human cells in our body. The diversity and number of beneficial bacteria depend on many factors including our exposure to antibiotics, the type of diet we consume, and the exposure we have to certain herbicides and pesticides. Glyphosate, unfortunately, is ubiquitous and sprayed on most non-organic crops and produce.
What has become more evident to me lately is that there are bi-products of healthy soil that are important to our microbiome as well and aid in the proliferation of beneficial bacteria and also serve to help us detoxify some the the metals and toxins we are exposed to.
So how does this relate to regenerative agriculture?
One of the major tenets of regenerative agriculture is re-establishing and building healthy soil. So here is where it gets really interesting and inspiring! In our small intestines, we have microvilli that protrude into the food we have eaten that is now in our intestines. These villi act a lot like the roots of plants, extracting what is of nourishing value from the soil. The microorganisms in both the soli and in our intestines, extract nutrients from what is "undigestible" by us as people and by plants and we both get many benefits. In addition, as mentioned earlier, the byproducts from these microorganisms in the soil and from the microorganisms in our intestines serve to nourish us further.
So food that is grown in healthy soil produces stronger more nutrient dense plants that are more resistant to disease and insects thus reducing the need for polluting and harmful fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. So when we eat produce and animal products from regenerative farms we are really getting back to nature.
Also as it turns out, this healthy natural soil does much more for us. It detoxifies the water that comes its way, it soaks up water so there is less erosion and drought and it sequesters carbon which reduces carbon in the air lessening greenhouse gases.
I am so excited about the potential for healing ourselves and the planet by restoring healthy soil and supporting regenerative agriculture. The Holistic Healing Center has a new page under the Resources heading titled "Regenerative Agriculture." There is further explanation of what it is and how you can support Regenerative Agriculture. In our local and surrounding areas, there are farms utilizing regenerative practices. Let's support them and this important means of healing ourselves and the planet.
