Dr. Overberg's “Longevity, Another Benefit From Vitamin D”

Study links vitamin D to reduced cellular aging

A recent study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that vitamin D supplements may slow cellular aging by preserving telomeres, the protective caps on chromosomes. Conducted as part of the Vitamin D and OmegA-3 Trial(VITAL), the research involved over 1,000 adults and found that daily doses of vitamin D3 reduced telomere shortening, equating to nearly three years of aging prevention. While omega-3 supplements showed no significant effect on telomeres, vitamin D's role in reducing inflammation and chronic disease risks was highlighted. "The study really shines a light on how vitamin D can help the body," registered dietitian Sue-Ellen Anderson-Haynes, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics says. "In addition to cellular preservation, it helps in so many facets of health including the gut microbiome, mood, and sleep." Food sources of vitamin D include fish, dairy products and mushrooms”. Drron notes: Mushrooms are the most concentrated whole food source of Vitamin D2, and Reindeer lichen, free of allergens and gluten, is a completely vegan source of vitamin D3---- is what the Neolife Vegan D, #3335 90 tablets 1000 iu. How about D3 and D2 is that important? No, Vitamin D undergoes two modifications, first in the liver, and second in the kidney. The kidney will use BOTH D2 and D3. Most importantly the kidney only makes the active form of Vitamin D IF it is needed to pull the calcium in. So, the old wives tale promoted by doctors and the public that excess Vitamin D will raise you blood calcium is nonsense. If you do have high serum calcium insist they check your Intact parathyroid hormone.

How many of you still don’t know your Vitamin D3 level? Also called the 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D Test or the 25(OH) D test. Still? How many of you have trained your doctors to include it in your annual physical blood work? How many of you have your health insurance pay for the test!

This is a true preventative test. If you are low you are headed to trouble, not in trouble yet. The mammogram tests don’t prevent breast cancer, they screen to see if you already have cancer and need treatment. Mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, they can prevent death due to breast cancer. There is a subtle difference, and a big price difference.

Breast cancer prevention should entail making sure people eat enough cruciferous vegetables, like: Arugula, Bok Choy, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower,Collard greens, Garden cress, Horseradish, Kale, Kohlrabi, Mustard greens,Radish, Rutabaga, Turnip, Wasabi, Watercress, Broccoli, Broccolini, Chinese cabbage, red cabbage, Daikon radish, and Turnip greens. At least on serving daily, or should I say: “Just one serving daily?”

Breast cancer prevention should include screening for Catechol-O-Methyl Transferase (COMT) gene mutations.  This gene codes for an enzyme that breaks down estrogen. Many cancer patients are estrogen receptor positive.

Aside note: Interestingly enough, that same COMT enzyme also breaks down Dopamine, Norepinephrine and epinephrine (adrenaline). Now we are talking about concentration issues and mood disorders. Drron likes to test for COMT mutations on people who methylation issues (MTHFR mutations), because if you both, then that combination can spell disaster for some people who supplement with methyl supplements like: active folate, 5-MTHF, Methyl vitamin B12 or SAMe.

This time of the year our serum Vitamin D is at its lowest, or just coming back up,especially if you been in the sun. Like drron who spend nine days in the Caribbean, no burn, some red skin, but it all turned brown. I made lots of Vitamin D3. The advice is to get sun, until you are about to get red, and then to apply the sunscreen. Drron doesn’t like the feel of sunscreen, because he grew up without it on Curacao. He was simply brown until he came to the US in1974. He could be out in the sun all day and not burn.

If you are tired of hassling with your doctor or insurance companies. Or they will charge you in excess of 100. Google “Vitamin D test cost”. You will find Quest www.questhealth.com offers the test for about $50. No doctor required, just money. LabCorp www.Labcorp.com also nationwide offers the test for $99. Then there are smaller providers and home test kits.

How is Drron? Coming home and getting started is hard. But as the need arising, motivational support jumps out at you. Here are two quotes I just happen to read:

“A common misconception is that you need to feel good to get going, but often it is the other way around: you need to get going to give your self a chance at feeling good…That is why it is important to just get started on the things that matter to you and give yourself a chance.”  Brad Stulberg, best-selling author.

The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy.  Kalu NdukweKalu

We had a wonderful time. Terrific rest and relax for Drron and Madonna. Drron did not open his laptop, did not look at his papers, or set up internet service. Texting still went through.
